Celebrate Juneteenth 2022 in Boston

A national holiday since 2021, Juneteenth celebrates the history, culture, freedom, and pride of African American people. Held annually on June 19th across the country, the Juneteenth holiday commemorates the emancipation of Black slaves in America.

In fact, Juneteenth dates back to June 19, 1865, when news of the Civil War’s end reached Galveston, Texas, nearly two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. In 2020, Boston officially made Juneteenth a Commonwealth holiday to recognize Black lives and the struggle for liberation in America.

Experience Juneteenth in America’s oldest city with events, parties, and ceremonies throughout Boston’s historic neighborhoods.
