6 weekend classes (schedule is discussed and determined during the first meeting to accommodate the needs of the class).Topics covered include the following: basic lathe safety, terminology, and operation; the selection/harvesting of wood for turning; proper tool selection and use; wood-finish selection and application for turnings. Students will operate the lathe while transitioning from basic spindle work to the completion of their very own wooden bowl. Students are responsible for providing their own face-shield. All other materials and tools are provided. Alan Hark has been teaching woodturning at local institutions such as Harvard University and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education for the past 15 years. - To participate in any class, children less than 18 years of age must be supervised by a parent or legal guardian during the entire event. Children less than 14 years of age cannot use any power tool (with the exception of random orbital sanders). Children 14 years of age and older may use power tools, but must do so under the direct supervision and guidance of the legal guardian or parent.
